Birchwood Schools aims to ensure that all pupils become fluent in the fundamentals of mathematics that allow them to develop the skills needed to be prepared for life.

Number

Recognition of number supports the development of other number skills. Young people will then be taught addition, subtraction, multiplication and division.

Geometry and Measures

Spatial reasoning and problem solving is developed through the teaching of geometry and measures.

Statistics

Statistics including probability allow young people to make sense of the information rich world in which they live.

Algebra

The teaching of algebra will also include ratio, proportion and rates of change. The teaching of algebra helps to develop a young persons critical thinking skills, allowing them to problem solve, identify logic patterns and explain reasoning.

Working Mathematically

Thinking, reasoning and working mathematically is an essential element of learning for, learning about and learning through mathematics. Young people will also develop the ability to think and reason mathematically, and to apply mathematics in a variety of situations and experience.
