At Birchwood School we put the pupil at the centre of our provision whilst ensuring that the curriculum is both knowledge rich and skills based. It has been designed to create awe and wonder, through a mix of learning experiences, creative approaches and essential life skills. Pupils who attend the school may need a bespoke education package; this will be tailored to the individuals needs. Communication and engagement skills are essential, and form the basis for all learning and are embedded throughout the curriculum.
English, Maths, Science, PE and PHSE are taught as core subjects. Religious Education and Relationship and Sex Education are taught across the school. The arts and humanities complete the curriculum. Life skills will be incorporated into individual pupil’s timetables. Independent careers advice will be provided to all pupils.
We recognise the importance of social, moral, spiritual and cultural (SMSC) development and highlight opportunities across the curriculum to explore and teach these values.
We engage and motivate pupils in a number of ways:
- A broad and balanced coverage of topics and subjects with basic skills at the core
- By offering an exciting range of activities and stimulating experiences to extend and compliment learning,
- By encouraging pupils to make connections in their learning.
